This week we have artist Katherine Jones
Tell us a bit about the business
I have always loved art, and this drove me to study architecture at Cardiff University. After seven years of training, I qualified as an Architect and worked in London for a few years. Whilst working full time, I started creating ‘object art’ during my spare time just for family, friends and myself as a way to be more creative. During a five month trip travelling through Central America and Mexico I started drawing again for fun and filled two sketch books which documented my trip. In 2016, I returned to Cardiff and found a job working as an Architect part time, leaving space to develop and grow my practice as an artist. After a successful few years, in May last year, I decided to take the leap and become self employed. I’ve not looked back and am loving every minute. I now focus mainly on my art, but do also take on a few interesting architecture projects as well.
What do you like most about trading in/from Cardiff?
There’s soooo much that’s great about Cardiff.
One key thing is it’s size – it’s perfectly formed – not too big, not too small, but always has lots of interesting events, buildings and places to visit and lovely independent shops and traders. It’s also so close to lots of other cities and places meaning it’s easy to get out and trade! Another key thing absolutely has to be the people –
everyone is just so friendly and loves a good chat.
Have you got any advice for other indie businesses?
Listen to your gut and have faith in yourself! .
Which are your favourite Cardiff Indie businesses /would you like to give a shout out to any local independents?
Ooh this is a hard one as there are SO many great businesses! Instead of just singling out a few, I’m going to suggest having a look at @makersarcadepopup @christmasmakersmarket and obviously here @cardiffindiecollective as there are too many lovely local makers to choose from! Gotta give a special shout out to my partner in crime though … @fwdge
